Official Race Videos Released as TV Program Develops (February 24, 2010)

Exclusive footage from this year’s race is available now on our YouTube channel - and the race production team is hard at work creating a full-length programme to air later this year, complete with spectacular helicopter shots, racer-eye view footage from 'on-board' cameras and a unique insight from top adventure racer Mike Kloser, who was embedded with the teams during the remote trekking sections.

YouTube release

The three video news releases of the 2010 Wenger Patagonian Expedition Race will allow the world to get a glimpse of the epic journey across the island of Tierra del Fuego in Chile, and relive the struggles and triumphs of participants in one of the most spectacular routes the event has ever seen.

Each video news release details a different portion of the race. The first video covers the equipment check, the skill test session and the opening ceremonies all of which take place in Punta Arenas as well as the official start and first day and a half of the race. The second video documents returning champions, team Helly Hansen-Prunesco, crossing the finish line in Puerto Williams. Last but not least, the third video contains footage of the closing ceremonies, again in Punta Arenas, as well as the finish of the remaining six successful teams.

Still to Come

The one-hour television documentary as well as two shorter series pieces will be distributed and aired across the globe later this year - and we will reveal teasers and time slots as they are confirmed.

Former Primal Quest winner Mike Kloser, who took hold of the camera to view racing from the other side in Chilean Patagonia for the show, believes the footage he and two other racer runners have filmed will help to create a truly unique programme. “You will really get the inside view of the race," he said. "It’s extremely unique footage and you wouldn’t get that without having someone embedded in the race.

"Hatch productions wanted to do a quality programme and the way to do that was to embed a cameraman in the race to follow around the teams in the places they couldn’t follow themselves. They wanted me to come down here because of my previous experience racing, my racing CV, and I was intrigued about the prospects of doing this because I had an interest in finding out what the southern tip of the world is about.

"In filming, you are an integral part in many ways, but you are also removed because you are not allowed to assist the teams. We got some really intense moments, like when the Spanish girl fell down in what seemed to be a very benign fall, but then she gashed her knee open and there is the drama of what they are going to do to mend it, are they going to be able to continue, and it all happened very quickly.

Kloser was also running with 2009 and 2010 champions Helly Hansen-Prunesco when they could not find the Tyrolean traverse and were forced to swim across the Azapardo River to continue the race. "With the river crossing, when I was with Helly Hansen-Prunesco, you get to be a part of it," he said. "They swam it, and I swim it too, with the camera on my head. It was pretty cool...."
