Walking around the town of Qikiqtarjuaq, it looked different from the other towns we have visited and the people are more friendly towards us, I was walking towards the harbour when a man, called Jessie Quartac, came up to me and asked if I was one of the people from the boat who was swimming the previous night. I told him that I was indeed one of the group that was swimming, we are sailing down to Iqualuit onboard the Pangaea. He suddenly asked me if I was interested in seeing his art work made from carvings from Ivory. Being interested I walked with him towards his home, he certainly was friendly inviting me into his house and showing me how he makes these carvings from Ivory which was so beautiful!
He showed me photos of his work that has been exhibited in Ottawa to be sold, one of his carvings was a Narwhal tusk that was decorated from root to tip with his carvings, showing a sled dog team chasing a polar bear and other traditional elements of the Inuit life. It took him a total of four months to make this piece of art, but he said he will never sell it, as it has so much sentimental value to him, even though he could sell it for hundreds of dollars. This is his way of making a living for him and his wife and three children, by hunting and then taking the ivory and making carvings on Narwhal tusks, or any other source he can find, even polar bear teeth and bones from whales and caribou.
Being so impressed with him and his work, I decided that he will be the ideal person to give the knife that Wenger gave us to give to some one here in Nunavut that will use it in everyday life. At first he did not understand that he could keep the knife, but when the message finally got through to him that he can keep it, he was ecstatic and gave me a big hug showing his joy and appreciation! He said he wanted to show his gratitude by giving me a polar bear tooth, and then it was my turn to be as excited as a small child on Christmas morning! Personally for me it was great to see that this Inuit man can still make an honest living by doing what he loves. He said he is going to use his special knife when he is out hunting and when making these magnificent carvings! The joy that man felt is all thanks to wenger sponsoring the knifes and Mike and his team bringing us to this remote world of the arctic region of Canada!
