The 2011 Wenger Patagonian Expedition Race is over with teams East Wind (Japan) and Perdido en el Turbal (US, UK) crossing the finish line in the epic 503 kilometre race this afternoon in fifth and sixth place respectively.
East Wind finished at 17.33, with Perdido en el Turbal following at 18.46.
British team adidasTERREX/Prunesco took out first place finishing yesterday afternoon, in the third win in a row for the team. The racers pushed hard from day one, rarely resting, to gain a commanding lead over the field of 14 international teams.
The winning team completed the multi-discipline course in eight days, with an acculumated time (which takes into account time stoppages) of five days, 12 hours and 36 minutes.
US team GearJunkie.com chased hard to catch the British racers, making some radical strategy decisions, including swimming and floating down large sections of fjords in freezing cold waters. The team was unable to catch the race leaders, but took out second place in the challenging race which was full of drama with heavy rains forcing the route to be shortened and three teams to be airlifted after sections became unpassable.
Completing the race in third and fourth place were Vaucluse Adventure Evasions from France and Ad Natura - Karibu, the first Croatian team to enter the race.
The remaining eight teams in the field were unable to finish and retired at different sections across the course.
